Summer Mini-Mix

I miss being a radio DJ. I really like making playlists. I’m trying to post more often on my blog. So here’s a thing: a summer soundtrack or whatever.

1. West Coast – Lana Del Rey

Look, I just moved to California and I’m often moody. Of course Lana Del Rey was going to be on this list. Are you surprised? Del Rey’s lyrics are as always drugged out and disconcerting, but this sultry track has been on repeat on my iPod since early June. I like to put on dark lipstick and pop the collar of my leather jacket and play this while I buy my groceries. Let me at those Eggo waffles, oooh so sexy. Ella Dawson = apartment subletter, purchaser of frozen waffles, and secret spy. I feel bad for my boyfriend who has no idea we will be listening to this entire album on repeat when we drive down the PCH to Los Angeles in a few weeks. I’M ON THE WEST COAST.

2. Dead Girl Walking – Heathers The Musical Soundtrack

Heathers has long been my favorite movie, and when I found out it was going to Broadway I freaked the fuck out. Murderous 80s bitches with hair scrunchies and a song made from the immortal quote “I love my dead gay son”? What can go wrong?! I didn’t get a chance to see the show and it’s closing in early August due to poor sales, but the soundtrack is… well, it’s pretty fly. ‘Dead Girl Walking’ is by far my favorite song: Veronica shows up at J.D.’s for some sexy times and it’s the best show tune of sexual empowerment I have ever heard. It includes the lyrics: “Sorry but I really had to wake you/See I decided I must ride you ’til I break you.” “Tonight I’m yours, I’m your dead girl walking/Get on all fours, kiss this dead girl walking/Let’s go you know the drill, I’m hot and pissed and on the pill/Bow down to the will of a dead girl walking.” HOW CAN I NOT LOVE THIS SONG?

3. Ugly Heart – G.R.L.

I’m a sucker for a pop girl band with a uke and a bass beat. This chorus is scary catchy and perfect for belting while thinking of that ex you’ll always kinda hate. Plus it’s about ladies excelling and that’s a soundtrack I need as I take over the world one unpaid internship at a time.

4. Rather Be ft. Jesse Glynne – Clean Bandit

I’m in a long distance relationship, obviously this is going to make the list. You’re sensing a theme here, yes? Girl pop? Ladies? OH WHAT A COINCIDENCE THIS IS A LIST OF LADY MUSICIANS. Anyway. This song is great listen to it.

5. Funnel of Love – Wanda Jackson

This seems like a really good song to drink whiskey to while dancing at a low-lit bar. Come on, picture it with me. Tank top strap slipping off of one shoulder, wry smirk, black high heels struggling for purchase just a little on the sticky floor. Mmm, being in my twenties. Note to self: that seems like a really good plan for next weekend. Except switch the whiskey for a PBR because let’s be real, I don’t drink whiskey.

6. Fair Game – Sia

Sia’s new album is worth listening to in its entirety and I’ll admit I picked this one somewhat at random, but lyrics about a woman meeting her match in a man she can consider her equal are wonderful. Romantic and sexy smart, this’ll probably be on loop as I try to scratch up some new characters.
